David Evans has been training since 1988. He left his home of Birmingham when he was 15 years old & became interested in racing through a couple of his Uncles who followed racing & like a few bets. His career had stared with Tom Bill & on to assistant with Annabel King. He had a jump license for a spell but by his own admission was not the most successful! He then took out his own training license with the help of a good friend Roy Ashford. Success came relatively quickly for him on the flat & over jumps & his Long Mountain Welshpool base churned out many winners over the next 12 years. He then took the plunge to buy his own place between Hereford & Abergavenny at Ty Derlwyn Farm, Pandy.
Putting in his own 4 furlong uphill gallop of sand & now relaid to carpet, lovely large stables, breaking areas & trotting ring, turn out paddocks & land to canter the horses for a change of scenery & ride through the wood, it made for the perfect environment to train a racehorse.
Since 2003 he & his wife Emma have built up a successful business with winners heading towards 1500. They both still ride out & are constantly hands on in the yard & Emma also runs the office side of things. They are backed up by some superb staff who always have the horses interests as a priority, which shows through how happy the horses are in their surroundings.
Although hard work has paid off over the years with numerous winners, class horses were always hard to get hold of but Master Beveled, The Kiddykid, Good Vibes to mention a few who won some class races along the way. It was not until this 2021 that he tasted success at Royal Ascot with Rohaan, beautifully ridden by Shane Kelly to come from last to first in The Wokingham handicap & by far the best horse he has trained to date, who has already picked up group 3 & group 2 races along the way, & by no means finished yet. He is just another testament of Dave’s skill of picking up a well bought horse & improving him which he has done with numerous horses over the years.
