The official all-weather racing season came to a close at Lingfield yesterday with the AW Championships finals day. The day started with the presentation of the awards for the 'all stars' categories. We are delighted to announce that the prolific Athassel managed to secure victory in the 'most winning horse' category. His fantastic six wins since the end of December made him the clear cut winner. Our apprentice Kathy Glenister, who rode him to two of his victories, was there on behalf of Dave and Emma to collect the award.
The day was then made even better by Terry Reffell's Gracious John putting in possibly a career best performance to finish a very close 2nd in a very fast time in the big 6 furlong sprint. He broke well under regular pilot John Egan and was quickly into the lead. He galloped the majority of his rivals into submission and with a furlong to go looked like he was going to make all but just got worn down nearing the line to finish second, beaten just half a length. It was a shame not to win but what a fantastic performance and left all connections absolutely delighted. He is an imposing strong colt and looks to be improving all the time - he should have a great season ahead on the turf.
Meanwhile at Bath racecourse we had some more good results. Wordiness ran very well after a small break to finish a good third under David Egan and we should have lots of fun with him this summer on the turf.
Then in the two year old race we had our Brockelsby runner up Last Page having his second run. It looked quite a hot race on paper but he rose to the challenge and although he still showed some signs of inexperience he ran very creditably to finish a very close 2nd - just loosing out in the last strides. A win is surely just around the corner for this smart looking gelding.
